Over the first half of 2025, a series of engaging sewing workshops brought new skills, friendships, and purpose to women in the Parramatta region.

Two initial six-week programs were held at the Cumberland Women’s Health Centre in Harris Park, introducing many women—some of whom had never used a sewing machine before—to basic sewing skills. By the end, participants proudly showcased their handmade items and shared stories in a warm, supportive environment.
Due to limited space at the centre, the group secured use of the Parramatta Lions Club’s den, enabling more women to participate.
Two more six-week programs followed—one for women from the Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS), and another for a group of Indian women seeking to give back to the community. Despite language challenges, JRS participants worked together enthusiastically, forming strong bonds while learning to sew.

The second group chose to support the Days for Girls initiative, creating menstrual hygiene kits for girls in countries where access to such products is limited or non-existent.

Both sewing groups will now continue meeting monthly to work on personal projects and contribute to community causes. New participants are welcome.
This initiative was made possible through the vision of Vandana Setia and the dedication of Vera Liondas, a member of the Rotary Club of Environment and Habitat. Vera brought her experience from working with SewAid, a charitable program founded by Tony and Sandy Castley. SewAid generously donated sewing machines, overlockers, and materials to launch the workshops.
Support also came from a community grant from Cumberland Council, which funded flannelette, face washers, and underwear for the Days for Girls kits, along with sewing equipment.
Special thanks go to Cumberland Women’s Health Centre for initially hosting the sessions, and to the Parramatta Lions Club for providing a larger venue to meet growing demand.
Through collaboration, generosity, and shared purpose, these workshops have sown the seeds of confidence, community, and opportunity.
